Not sure how these cars are configured or if the PO did the pluming correctly.

Which port (front or back) goes to the front brakes and which goes to the rear brakes?

This is not conclusively published in any publications I've seen.

Some time ago I tried to get the group here to have a look at their systems and report back so we could get a consensus.

I was really disappointed in how few people took the 5 minutes to check and report back, especially on such an important and undocumented item.

Anyway, my conclusion looking at the physics and limited replies is that...

Big Cap MC – Front Reservoir to Front Brakes
Small Cap MC - Front Reservoir to Rear Brakes

Edit:typo

My car is a 69 Mk3 currently has a Big Cap but I know the PO installed it so I am not sure if that is what should be in the car. I can't get to it right now - rock hard snow surrounding it, but as soon as I can I will document how it is presently configured.

On my '71, '72, and '73 the front, large reservoir is for the front brakes. They changed in later years.

My front master cylinder port goes to the front disk brakes and rear port to the rear drum brakes.

Are the fittings the same on the early and late master cylinders?

My car is a modded Mk 2 with a later style MC and steel brake line run through a hole drilled and epoxyed through the frame and crossing about an inch away from the exhaust pipe (my Toyota engine has the exhaust is on the wrong side). Boy, is it rusty where the heat has cooked it, the brake line metal is flaking away. I would prefer to get the Mk 2 copper nickel kit, but will the fittings work on the later MC?

thanks (now I am curious about which line is going where, but I can't look, the car is crammed way up under the workbench and the hub is all torn apart)

Greg I haven't seen images of the two kits, however, if memory serves.....

Although line diameter is the same size, I'm pretty sure it was the front lines that had larger fittings on them, likely to avoid having them crossed either at the factory or even later. And, again, if I recall, that was the same for both Big Cap and Small Cap MCs, so naturally they would need to be reversed if you change between the two.

When I got my car it was the opposite of yours, the PO had replaced the newer MC with an older version and I think altered the lines accordingly because I remember having to reverse them when I got a new MC.

With my Engine Swap the lines also got pretty close to the exhaust. This year I'll be redoing the lines to a more hospitable route and eliminating the PDWA.

We did my brother's 240Z last summer and with the copper nickel lines and sweet flare tool from Eastwood, it went very well. (on sale now too!)
