My 76 Spit Refurbishment
As much as I hate to do it I have given up on this car's body. The farther I get into it, the more I realize I'm throwing time and eventual money into a pit. I certainly got bent over when I bought this car, but I got a few years of fun driving out of it so I can't complain too much lol.
Today I was attempting to remove the box tube and angle iron from the rocker area. It wouldn't budge no matter what I tried. I started to peel back the floor pan which sort of doubled as the inner sill.
When I removed a section of it I found the original inner sill is still underneath. I peeled a little more metal and the floor has a quilt of patchwork. Over the top of the patches was a larger patch which I think was intended to hide the crap underneath. This added up to a thickness that varies from two layers up to four layers of metal.
The PO's lack of attempting to match the factory panel locations etc. is just plain frustrating!
So my next step is to get some money saved for a good donor body tub. I'll certainly have to make sure there isn't any past body work of the same quality as my current one.
In the meantime I'll lift this body off and begin work on the frame. I know it has some areas that need work, and I'll be able to get it repaired and painted for a new body to put on.
On the good news front, UPS dropped my new rear valance panel off on Friday. It's made in the UK I think it's the one that Rimmer Bros. sells. I paid 39 dollars shipping and all so I am stoked about the good deal. If the new tub doesn't need a valance, I can trade it or sell it to get other panels!
