It has been a good week for the Spitfire not for the the Thanksgiving holiday though. Next year will be better!
I finished greasing and oiling everything on the front end. I retorqued all of the bolts on the front suspension and replaced the front rod ends. The boot on one side was cracked and split and the other side the rubber was breaking down and showed cracks. Another disappointing sign, as these can’t be more than 3 years old and only 2 years and about 2000 miles of use, absolute crap. I bought a new set from LBCarco (Moss dealer) they are more robust and look better than the ones I pulled off. Let’s hope they last.
I also installed the Revotec electric cooling fan and removed the fan on the water pump. The Revotec recommended wiring for the override switch made no sense, so I modified it, works like a charm and doesn’t run power and all the fan current through the small wires and switch (made no sense to do that when you could just switch the relay instead). I haven’t had any trouble with cooling using the stock fan except for the time I was stuck in traffic in Pittsburgh while at the PVGP. Temps approached 210 and climbing that day. I also mounted the hard top.
Today was unusually nice, sunny and not too cool (high 40s low 50s). I pulled the car outside and got an engine run and readjusted the mixture. Since it was so nice I took it around the block (which out here is about 4 miles total), ran well, just a little lean at idle. I added two flats to each carb and then spent some time aligning the front end and got the steering wheel more level when going straight. I took it out for another run around the block and the wheel was nice and straight. I checked the torque on the left rear hub just to be sure. I will be keeping an eye on it for a bit.
I put the car on dollies and put the cover on. Probably the real last drive of the year and mostly done with my hit list. Time to put it away for the season. Back to working on the MGiata.
