Today was spent disassembling the overdrive transmission.
I made a road trip to British Automotive, Ben coached me through the disassembly of the transmission.
I had washed it out thoroughly in a parts washer so it came out pretty clean. It went pretty smoothly and the transmission is in very good shape. The key way in the drive for the O/D pump gave us a little trouble, but we eventually got it off. It always helps to have the right tools and this came in handy when we had to remove the bearings from both ends. Ben had a stash of original Triumph tools made for the job.
The O/D unit was very clean and the filters only had a little material, so we only checked the solenoid (it works
) and checked the passageways (all clean). The end of the input shaft that goes into the spigot bearing had some corrosion, fortunately he had one on the shelf that looked good as they are no longer available.
We will be replacing all the gaskets, reverse gear, synchro rings, the Woodruff key, roller bearings and one of the spacing washers we succeeded in breaking.
I brought home the case and some parts to clean up and paint over the weekend.
Hopefully all the parts should be in next week and we can get it back together next Saturday.
While I was there I also looked around and got some more pictures of the treasures there, I also found a great head for one of my MGA 1800 motors, all ready magnifluxed and hardened seats
