Several hours today of progress.
I got the flanged hole made and the patch inserted into place. Everything lined up well so it was time to start welding. Plug welds across the top, side and along the bottom. the overlapped flange seemed to work ok. I think in this case it was easier than a butt weld. I'm not too worried about the strength of the joint, I got good penetration and where I didn't I was able to get it from the other side.
I then got started on forming the patch for the inside of the wheel well. This is a complex shape and I took the same approach I did on the driver's side, just a mirror image. It came together well and I got a couple of coats of weld through primer on it before I called it a day.
