Check out John Twist (From Universty motors) on facebook. There is a three part video Re carb. rebuilding. One part deals with the problem that you described. If i'm correct... it sounds like a worn O-Ring, the replacement is decribed in one of these videos.

Hi folks, son in law and I rebuilt the carb and it started right up but there was a gas leak
around the bottom plug, so I ordered one of those and we'll see how that goes, thanks
for the input. Arch
