John Reger's 1963 Triumph TR4
|
Car was partially disassembled in 1976 to be painted blue. It sat in a garage for 39 years until it was sold to a guy in Pittsburgh, PA. He had it for a few months and decided to sell, at which point I bought it off of eBay. I was looking for a TR4 but was not ready to buy, but this car came up for sale and it has a supposedly original aluminum surrey top and was within 4 hours of my house. I bought it the day after it was listed for sale. I towed it home and had to find a place to keep it. My brother sells industrial air compressors, so I could not take up any floor space in the garage at our commercial property. So we actually built a pallett for it and lifted it up into my lumber rack with a forklift. So at the moment it sits 10 feet off the ground where I plan to get it running, then bring it down. I am hoping to make a bit of a resto-mod. I am not going to do anything that isn't easily reversible. I will keep the engine and trans to go back in in the future. I would like to replace the engine and transmission with the driveline out of either a 2.3 EcoBoost Mustang or a 2.0 Ecotec from a Pontiac Solstice GXP/Saturn Sky Redline. This will be way more horsepower, but more importantly should deliver around 35-40 mpg! I plan on leaving the suspension and brakes stock, if at all possible. I would rather keep everything period correct, but I can't pass up the power, reliability and efficiency of a new engine. I want this to be my ideal vehicle, a luxury sports car. A poor man's Aston Martin. I plan to do the interior in leather and wood myself. I went to school for woodworking and am teaching myself to do upholstery. I have some cool ideas I think most fellow Triumph guys are gonna love. I'd like to some day use it to pull my 1956 14' FeatherCraft Vagabond II boat (the boat and trailer only weigh 500lbs, I can pull it uphill by hand with no effort, so I am sure it won't be a problem to tow). As you can tell I am very excited. Once I get about a million things for my home and business done I am gonna start working on it. My goal is to get it on the road with it's stock drivetrain and work slowly on it while driving it until it's what I want. Hopefully it will be driving in Oct 2017 to go to the Hershey AACA show in it. Glad to be in the Triumph Community and look forward to getting to know some of you.
