A question that has baffled me for quite some time. Factory parts manual shows Felt mounting strip top rear and bottom rear on the gas tank (611972 and 611973 respectively. I have not seen them installed on any gas tank over the years. My current 67 4A project of which it was never taken apart for resto until now has two felt strips that look original on the side of the tank facing the trunk so the rear panel fibre board has a cushion. Just curious if anyone figured out exctly what they are protecting. When mounted the tank sits off the bottom shelf and is cushioned by the two foam grommets on the bottom. Curious in Ocala!

Also interesting. Moss Motors shows the two felt strips on the side facing the rear like mine were.

Jim: the TR250 and early TR6 has the same tank and felt strips, but in the 250/6 catalog they are called "anti-rattle felt strips". The picture in this catalog shows them top and bottom (unlike the 4A catalog). Go figure!

I imagine these strips intend to prevent the rear fuel tank panel from flexing and vibrating against the tank. I would imagine any sort of isolation padding would work there for this purpose. My car had no panel there at all when I got my car, so I am assuming.

I had the same question. I guess part of the anti-rattle for the trunk panel piece as mentioned by Russell. Mine shows those two felt strips as well.

Yea, that’s how mine were on the back of the tank. Might be an error in the orig8nal parts manual that was corrected by a service bulletin. Rimmer Bros also show it on back like in your picture. That’s where I’m putting it. Jim

Yeah, they actually should be called "autorust strips." They are near-perfect water traps. The ones on the sides aren't too bad, but the ones on the bottom are responsible for a lot of rusted tanks. The Triumph factory was in love with felt, but perhaps because there was nothing else available for a decent price.

I'd suggest using anything else. You don't have to do everything the same way the factory did.

Good morning, how are you doing. I reassemble my TR6 and I think I used cork for between the bottom of the tank and the body.

What do you think about it. cork resists alcohol and water, so why not gasoline.

Cordially
Jean Marc
