Ever since then I have had that car in the back of my mind. Like most of you, as life went on priorities changed, twenty years of military service, marriage, mortgages, children, work, tuitions, etc. the prospects of buying a TR-6 were slim and none.
Now that the mortgage is paid off and the college tuitions are behind us and with the consent of my wife Mary, I was able to finally fulfill my dream.
I’d been looking at the TR-6 sporadically for many years on e-bay and Hemming’s and a few other online sites. Then in the last two years or so it became very intense, I started tracking and charting different cars and watching auto auctions on television.
Finally, I saw an ad in Hemming’s for, what appeared to be, a California car being sold by Mohr Imports in Monterey, California. It turned out that they just acquired the car from the original owner in Phoenix, Arizona. The car had been garage kept in Arizona since 1977, and has never been restored. The car came with the original bill of sale and window sticker along with an original shop manual and all the work order receipts.
Mohr Imports did replace the convertible top. I contracted with Guy at The Sports Car Shop in Monterey, CA to do a pre-buy inspection for me. Guy was very happy with the handling and overall condition of the car. The car has the original paint, which looks great and it was undercoated at the dealer when first purchased.
I made an offer to Mohr Imports and after two counter offers we made the deal. The car was shipped by Sweet Logistics of San Clemente, CA using Show Car Trans, Troy, MI in a covered truck to Matt Bakes at Triumph Rescue Bally, Pa. I had previously called Matt and asked if he would perform the work that was needed based on the pre-buy inspection.
I joined the New Jersey Triumph association in February and finally on March 10th, 2015 I drove my first TR-6, it was a long journey but well worth the wait.
The original owner’s record keeping was amazing and it turns out that this car was imported by Leyland Motor Sales Carlstadt, NJ for Picard Motor Sales Inc. North Smithfield, RI where he purchased it on April 14, 1974 while in the Navy stationed in New London, CT.
This whole car buying experience, buying a car “sight unseen”, has made me feel fortunate that there are very professional and passionate individuals out there working to help keep these beautiful cars going.
