Have been noticing a constant whine from engine area and removed the brown / yellow stripe wire from the alternator. Alternator stopped charging and whine stopped. Reattached wire and whine started again. Should a hard working alternator whine?

The windings in electrical equipment can whine when under load.
A blown diode in the alternator bridge will yield unbalanced forces that can make the windings 'sing'.
But the bearings can also experience cyclic forces when the units are under load and make noise.

Many FLAPS have alternator testing equipment.
It's worthwhile to have the alternator tested.
Even though it's working now, you can replace it now if called for.

Agree.

Out alternators are so easy to remove, and checking is free.

Much easier to diagnose a sound when the alternator is off the car.

Thanks. I'll take it out and have it tested.
