Could not tell what was going on not
enough light not enough room the punch slipped
didn't realize that and I kept swinging the hammer.

Not the race. The race would be much harder and not mush like that. It is the part that holds the bearing seal.
Best would be to remove the burr with a file, or you will not be able to drive in a new seal wirhout damaging it.
I think you are going to have to remove the front diff carrier.

Tony, if a punch did the damage, and a seal is going back in, could he hammer it back to the original position, with the support still fitted ?
then fit another seal, might be tedious but removing the support could cause other problems holding the parts from moving>

I don't know how much pounding this part can take before it breaks a piece out of the casting,
the support should be a very close fit, could it help hold it together,
or will he just need to remove some of the metal from inside instead.
Are you just replacing the seal or bearings too ?

as suggested on your other thread, don't let grindings or metal slivers into the bearing when doing work. Cover the bearing with some cloth.
I think you can fix this, we can't see the inside so is it just a burr or has the metal pushed into the opening behind the burr ?
