don't know about that technique but the simplest is to unroll the coil using the floor as a jig. Lay one end of the line on a flat floor, lock it with your foot, in standing position, unroll the coil using the floor as a jig and move forward always locking the straight pipe with your foot. It will end as straight as the floor. Use shoes with soft soles to prevent crushing the pipe while stepping on it.

$5. pipe bender, available at any auto parts store, worked for bending new brake line to most any shape, tool won't kink the pipe.

Lots of different tools out there ranging from cheap to expensive...most work pretty well. Ebay should have some used ones and here’s one from the uk.
