Frank,

At your convenience, please run TS 79475 L and again with a 2 in front, 2 TS 79475 L. Don't know why that 2 is there. It is a different stamp from the regular number. The car is titled as a 1959.

Thanks,

tony

Tony,
I had a problem with yours. My proof dates (owners who got build certificates and
gave me their definite dates)don't quite check with my chart.
As close as I can get is 26 Aug 1960
The number 2 in front of the Comm number doesn't make any sense.
If it appears on paperwork only, I'd guess a typo; If it appears on a
Commission plate, I'd guess the plate itself is a reproduction with a
built-in error.
There are many variations in letters on Commission plates,
but no mention of a number preceding the TS designation

We've discussed the leading '2' before; it's been found on original plates. One theory is that it was added by some dealers when selling the car as a later model year (similar to the STC plate found on some other cars). If that is correct, Tony's car may not have been sold originally until 1962 (or late 1961).

Another theory is that the leading number indicates the car was assembled outside the UK. (Some countries had higher tariffs on cars than on car parts, so the cars were shipped in "completely knocked down" condition and assembled in-country as a kit.) However, '2' was assigned to Australia and no one could offer a reasonable explanation of how so many Australian-assembled cars wound up in North America.

Thank you, Frank. I think I have attached a link to a picture of my commission plate. Just for info, if you get the pic you will be able to see the number 2 was obviously added after the fact.

Thanks again,

tony

Randall mentions some possibilities for the extra digit.
I'm sure the factory didn't add any letters/numbers preceding the comm number.
That is obvious in your photo
Ignore it is my advise.
Frank.

Don't know if you ever acquired any TR3B information since this thread started years ago Frank.

But just in case ... my TR3B is titled as a '62 with a VIN of TCF68L

Thanks,
Don

Since I just got here, I'll add my data to your archive - TS47905L was built 15 April 1959 (at 3:00 pm - Joel Rosen's records included the time of day).

That was very near the date when they skipped a lot of numbers to begin a set of changes with TS50000 (or maybe TS50001).

Now would you like to guess my weight & my fate?
