The back of my TR looks like a garbage scow gunnel, with ugly vertical streaks and stains. I've tried washing it with various brands of car soaps. Even tried WD-40! What do you use to clean matte black and keep it looking clean?

You may have to repaint it....and if you do only use soap and water to clean it and never wax it.

chemicalguys.com make a whole line for matte paint - have not tried them but their stuff is usually pretty good.

Tony raises a good question re. the original paint "color" - satin vs. matte. My car was repainted at some point, so I'm unsure of what's on there. Since my first step is to attempt cleaning the existing paint, I'm seeking something that will work on either finish. I suspect mine got waxed at some point, hence the ugly streaks.

SEM Trim black out a spray can works great ! I did my rear with it and am super happy. Here is a photo

I also did my windscreen/windshield frame using the SEM trim black out of a spray can.
This will give you a general idea. Frame just sitting in place. Not installed yet. https://www.triumphdrivers.com/photo/50692

SEM Trim black is good stuff. I recently found another product I like even better because it's a 2 part hardened paint - Spraymax Hotrod Black. Here's a link....

Wrap it, if you don't like it peel it off.
