I want to run 5" wire 72 spoke rims on my tr3a. Can anyone let me know if there are any issues with clearance? What size tire should I run? I want white walls.
Thanks in advance

I've run 15" x 5" Morgan +4 Wheels (Motor Wheel Services #459, or Moss #454-665) on two different TR3A cars for approximately 25 years, with no tire clearance or wheel offset issues. I use 165-width Vredestein tires, and the aspect ratio is 80. Note that the #459 wheels are narrower than the commonly-used TR6 72-spoke wheels. Other folks will need to chime-in with their experiences with TR6 wheels, as I have no direct experience with them.

72-spoke wheels weigh a bit more than the 48 and 60-spoke wheels that early TRs usually wore, but they're very strong and don't seem to get out of "true". One way to decrease the weight penalty is to order new wheels that have the proper sealing for tubeless tires, and by doing that you'll save the weight of a rubber inner tube at each corner. Assuming, of course, that you buy tubeless tires. Check with your tire dealer on the weights of whatever tires you buy, as there may be a lot of variance between brands.

I have 5.5 x 15 TR6 72 spoke wires on my TR3B with 185 x 15 tires. No problem with rubbing on any turns.

A little harder to turn at slow speeds but not that bad.

You also need tubes of course.

I also have 5.5"x15", 72 spoke wires with 185/70 tires on my TR3 and no problems.

For a 5" rim, ideal size is 165 or 175. Max would be 185.

Sorry, not me. I run 5.5" TR6 steel wheels, no experience with 72 spoke wires.
