Spitfire Le Mans Bonnet

Hi All- I have been researching this topic, trying to follow up on leads, and asking questions since I acquired my Spitfire last summer. Does anyone in North America produce or have a nose mold to the Spitfire Le Mans Bonnet (the one with the perspex headlight covers)? I located three vendors in the UK. One (Quillers) e-mailed this morning to let me know they won't even ship that to the U.S.. As you all know, the price for the nose itself is not too bad, its the shipping that kills the whole idea. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks for looking.

Unless one has sprung up since I last looked, the answer is a resounding NO!

Hmmm...that's what I've been fearing. Being a former vintage racer (primarily Formula Ford), I've always had a fascination with production-based factory racing specials such as the Spitfire Le Mans or the Sebring Sprite. As I got into the restoration of my Spitfire, it became apparant that the current bonnet on my car was comprised of 40% steel, 40% bondo, and 20% rust, so I saw an opportunity to build something unique. As it is, I found a source for a fiberglass stock bonnet. That would make much more economic sense, so I may go that route.... Unless I find something in a barn...

A fellow member of the FOT found my bonnet languishing in a warehouse on the East coast where it had sat since being imported from SAH in Englan in the 60's. I bought it for $500.00 which included shipping to Arizona. Maybe you will be as lucky.

I got mine off ebay about 10 years ago after dressing up like Cher for my wife's end of the year party! What we won't do for Triumph parts! Good luck in your search! Scott

Maybe we need to go to England pick these up in person and ship/bring them back ourselves!
( I'm on a similar quest for the GT6 style fastback hardtop for the Spitfire, and yes I run into the same snafu ).

Maybe if you dress up like Cher and put a handle on the bonnet (call it a carry on), they'll let you through customs?tongue sticking out smiley

I just checked and my can of whoop-ass is past it's use-by date.

This company is in Kansas, and they make fiberglass body parts for the Spitfire. They don't list the LeMans type bonnet, but they could do it with the right buck to lay the glass on. No experience with these folk.

I also know a company in Maryland that makes many fiberglass custom car panels. I do know their work, and like it. They also could make a LeMans bonnet, again if they had a buck.

All either would need is a LeMans bonnet to mold off of, then they could make the buck from that. If anyone is willing, pretty much any fiberglass shop nearish to anyone having a LeMans bonnet could do the job.

There is a guy in PA that does glass panels and he is a member here...he does mostly MG stuff but it may be worth asking him...maybe a group buy or something....
I am just putting it out there....

his name is Tim Nagy and his company is morSpeed Performance

Someone needs to cut up an old bonnet to make the pattern. But, of course you could just cut and weld the one you have into a LeMans.

Maybe I could take Tiny Tim up to Kansas and spend a couple of days with that company so they could get dimensions in order to modify their Mk1 Bonnet/

At one time, I was seriously considering taking a stock bonnet and modifying it so that the headlights were inset like the Lemans cars. Sadly, the project remains on the back burner.

I thought about doing the same, considered installing 5" lights to help with the inset.

Dimensionally, what was done to a stock Spitfire bonnet to make it the Le Mans Bonnet? Was the nose extended or the lights set back? I would participate in a project like that.
