maybe technically i don't really know what a "resonator" is.

is this picture below a resonator? it would seem to me that this would both break-up the sound waves traveling through (changing the frequency) slow down the flow which should also muffle it, yes, no maybe?

Maybe in a really, really basic way. A resonator is kind of a muffler, but it's not. The length and breath of the resonator determine what gets cancelled out. There is some packing in steel ones. However the chamber is the tricky part.
