The late Spitfires have a dash plaque that lists National Championships for the Spitfire in the years 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978. That’s a remarkable run isn’t it? Eleven years in a row.

Those were not the only years that a Spitfire won a National Championship. I went back to the SCCA Runoffs Results page at https://www.scca.com/pages/runoffs-archive, and found several more championships. By my count, there are at least 8 more years that could be recorded as “National Championships” on the Spitfire dash plaques. I can’t figure out how to research the years back from 2001 online. I can find some Autoweek postings, but they are difficult to decipher. If anyone has an idea on how to find this information, I’d appreciate a heads up. Here's what I found...

2016 - Tom Feller was 6th in H Production with his Spitfire.

2015 - Tom Broring was 5th in HP in a Spitfire.

2014 - Andrew Wright made four laps for 19th place in a Spitfire.

2013 - Road America this year, and Aaron Johnson took 8th in H Prod, with Chris Crisenberry in 10th and Andrew Wright making 6 laps for 24th place. Tom Broring made a couple laps in his Spit. Jerry Barker made it to 20th place for the highest Spitfire finish in F Production that year, and Chris Patrick made 6 laps in his Spit. Steve Sargis took 3rd Place in the GTL class in a Spitfire, behind a winning Honda CRX and a Nissan Sentra in 2nd.

2010, 2011, 2012 - Steve Sargis took F Production in 2012, and 2011. It looks like he had the #1 qualifying position in F Prod in 2010 and had the fastest lap before breaking on lap 9. However, he won the H Production class that year in a Spitfire.

2009 - Looks like Sargis made one lap in the F Prod race in 2009. Chris Patrick had the highest Spitifire finish at 16th.

2008 - Sargis ran the fastest lap in 2008’s F Prod race but took 2nd place in behind Jesse Prather in a Miata. 6th Place in FP went to James Blust in H Prod.

2007 - Tom Feller had the pole and took the H Production crown at Topeka in 2007

2006 - Tom Feller won the H Production race. Sargis took 2nd place in FP in 2006 behind Prather’s Miata.

2005 - Tom Feller won H Prod in 2005, and Chris Crisenberry was 2nd with his Spitfire. Sargis again took 2nd place in F Prod in 2005, this time to a Porshce 914-4.

2004 - Tom Feller won H Production ahead of a Sprite in 2nd place and Chris Crisenberry’s Spitfire in 3rd at Mid-Ohio. It was not a good year for Spitfires in F Production with Dieter Griesinger taking 9th and Sargis taking 27th after winning the pole position but breaking on lap 2 after setting a runoffs record lap time. However, Mark McAllister did take 2nd in G Production behind a Datsun 510.

2003 - Dieter Griesinger took 7th in F Prod at Mid-Ohio. Sargis made one lap and it was the fastest lap of the race. Crisenberry took 7th in G Production in a Spitfire. Notable in this race is there were TEN Spitfires in a field of 34 cars for the GP race. Tom Feller took 2nd place in H Production behind a Honda Civic this year.

2002 - Mid-Ohio, Steve Sargis won F Fproduction while Dieter Griesinger managed was in 24th place. GP had nine Spitfires with Chris Crisenberry highest at 5th place.

I found a full listing in a PDF file, hard to manage making readable list out of that. I'm working on it and will post it later.

So here is a list. I believe it is complete and accurate up to the 2016 season. Let me know if you see any errors or omissions.

By my count, there are 28 SCCA National Championships for the Triumph Spitfire, and these happened in 24 different years. Spitfires won multiple class championships in some years. The number at the end is the number of National Championships for the driver at that point in time.

I looked up also the National Champion List of SCCA and found that the Triumph Spitfire
won more National Championships than any other car, "in its class" (F).

Please confirm. Lot's to say about thissmiling smiley

I don't know how to confirm that, but I think it's probably true. Others with more background knowledge might be able to tell us. Spitfires won national championships in more than class "F", of course. I see them in "E", "G" and "H".
