I also had a oil leak from my new spin on so i sent your question to our chat forum. This was a good reply

I just put one on my TR3B. I did not use any sealent. There is a rubber gasket just like the one you used on your drop in cartridge. They give you about 4 gaskets, I chose the one not too fat and not too skinny. Are you sure there isn't an old gasket still stuck up in there?

Anyway, the gasket, then the aluminum adapter, then there is a little O-ring, 1 1/2 inch, put that in, then the thing that goes into the center hole, what your spin on filter threads to.
Put the old filter on, and do not over tighten.

If I were you, I'd just redo it. Clean it all well. Follow the instructions. When you are done, you should not need sealent, and it shouldn't leak. (You'll have plenty of other oil leaks, but not from the filter assembly.)

Good luck.
Steve
